An Efficient Furnace Motor Impacts Savings All Year

An Efficient Furnace Motor Impacts Savings All YearIt’s now possible to get a more efficient furnace motor, an integral component of your HVAC system, that can translate into big energy savings – and those energy savings are possible in both the heating and cooling seasons for South Bay, Peninsula and Santa Cruz area-homeowners.

In the past, permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors were generally used with HVAC systems. However, they could not operate at peak efficiency because of the increased noise the motor emitted. This setback prevented energy savings by as much as 45 percent and limited how the blower motor could be used.

Today, however, with the introduction of the electronically commutated motor (ECM), it is now possible to achieve top efficiency levels, as well as improved comfort. As a result of technological advancements, ECMs are able to reach and maintain peak efficiency of up to 75 percent, achieved through technology that prevents overheating, avoids producing extra heat, uses ball bearings (which increases lubrication), and prevents further wear and tear on the components – all factors that prevented the PSC from advancing energy savings.

With a better motor, HVAC systems can run more efficiently. Often used with the furnace blower or air handler, ECMs allow a variety of startup speeds, leading to energy savings from reduced electricity consumption and increasing comfort. When the HVAC system can start up at lower speeds and maintain those speeds during milder conditions, the motor consumes less electricity and air circulates more often, allowing an even flow of conditioned air throughout the day.

For homeowners in California, where the long summer season requires continuously cooled air, that’s good news. With an ECM, it is now possible to use the furnace fan or air handler throughout the day to circulate conditioned air, even when the furnace or A/C isn’t running. In the past, this action would have consumed too much electricity and was cost-prohibitive for most homeowners.
