According To Experts, What Is The Expected Life Span Of A Heat-Pump System? If your heat pump has served you well over the years, then there’s a good chance you’re a little bit reluctant to go out and replace it. While that’s understandable, it is important to at least be aware of the factors that contribute to heat pump life span. By holding onto your heat pump too long, you greatly increase the risk for major problems or even a complete breakdown, and you certainly want to avoid that.

First of all, if you’ve had your heat pump for more than 10 years or so, you’ll probably want to seriously consider replacing it. Usually they will start to become more susceptible to problems and simply wear out when they’re between 10 and 15 years old. Even if it’s a well-made pump, it’s inevitable that major components of the pump such as the compressor, outdoor coil, accumulator, or reversing valve will eventually go bad. Newer units, however, as technology becomes more advanced, tend to last longer.

That being said, you do have a limited amount of control over your personal heat pump life span. First and foremost, making sure to schedule regular maintenance and tune-ups will greatly increase the likelihood of your heat pump having a long life. This type of attention allows the appliance to run more smoothly and efficiently, increasing its life span and significantly decreasing the chance of breakdowns. Professional maintenance will cost you a little bit of money, but it’s an investment that will likely end up saving down the road.

If you stay informed and make sure to pay attention to your heat pump, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Heat pumps that are well cared for simply last longer, and by being informed, you’ll know when the time does eventually come for a replacement.
